Mountain Bikes

As the name suggests, a mountain bike is designed to travel on off road, dirt, or mountainous terrain. These bikes are typically lightweight with a sturdy frame, broad tires with very deep treads and multiple gears.

While it might seem a bit out of place, a unicycle is certainly worth mentioning. A unicycle is a type of bicycle that touches the ground with only one wheel.  The most common type of unicycle has a frame with a saddle and is powered solely by the pedal. Unicycles are used mostly for performances by streets performers or in festivals or carnivals. Some people learn to unicycle as a hobby, but very few people ride a unicycle as a legitimate form of transportation.

Scooters and mopeds

k2-_a23182a3-682d-428a-8588-99b94d6bd53c.v1Scooters became extremely popular during the 1990’s. Scooters, which are not really considered to be a motorcycle by many schools of thought, are often smaller and have much less powerful engines than some of their counterparts.

They tend to be much more affordable than bigger motorcycles. They became extremely popular because of their cheap running costs, the frustration of the masses of the urban traffic gridlock, and the invention of newer, sleeker models. Insurance on scooters is noted to be considerably cheaper than insurance of sports bikes.

Sport Bikes

Sports bikes are motorized bikes known for having extremely fun and powerful engines. They are often aesthetically pleasing and built aerodynamically. The Japanese market chiefly owns most of the sport bikes on sale today. Popular brands include Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Honda. This type of bike is not necessarily recommended if you are shopping for a motorcycle for the first time. Car insurance is known to be extremely high on this type of bike.

A chopper is a type of custom motorcycle, which appeared in the United States in the 1960’s. This type of motorcycle is known for having very extreme custom design. The goal of the bike is to have a stretched out appearance; this is usually completed by radically modifying the steering angles and lengthening the forks of the bike. This bike is defined by its stretched out appearance and high handlebars.

Typically cruisers have “low seats, long wheel bases, loads of chrome, and most importantly, a laid-back attitude”. In other words, for any fanatic out there trying to picture a Cruiser, you need go no further than a Harley Davidson.  While there are a few other companies out there who make custom cruisers such as Moto Guzzi and BMW, Harley Davidson continues to reign supreme in this department.

Touring Motorcycles

Touring motorcycles are specifically designed to travel well at long distances. Touring motorcycles have large displacement engines, fairings and screens that offer weather and wind protection, and a relaxed upright position for seating.

Dirt Bikes

A dirt bike is a motorcycle, often smaller than some of its road counterparts, that is specifically used on rough terrain or unsurfaced roads. These types of bikes are often used for competition in sport. There are many different types of dirt bikes such as Motorcross, Enduro, and Rallie Raids.

I am a lover of all things having to do with bikes. While motorcycles happen to be my cycling weapon of choice, I don’t discriminate against any time of cycle. I enjoy spending my fair share of time on a pedal bike as well-both road bikes and mountain bikes. I’ve rented scooters in Bermuda, taken my motorcycle out on to the open road, and taken a road bike down many a mountain.
